Luton Borough Council had identified a site for the school as a previously occupied building that had housed a primary school and more recently a secondary school. As the building was previously used as a school there is little significant work needed, however work to provide specialist rooms and external landscaping, to ensure the site is accessible and suitable for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), is due for completion by Luton Borough Council by Summer 2021.
Windmill Hill School will be a secondary special school for children aged 11-19, scheduled to open September 2021, and will work closely with the current secondary special school (Woodlands Secondary School) to complement the current outstanding offer. Luton Borough Council have previously carried out a consultation to open a new provision in Luton as Woodlands is at full capacity. Therefore there is a need for a new school to provide additional school places in Luton and reduce the current pressure on Woodlands Secondary School and ensure every child in Luton that requires a special school place can attend a school in their own community.
Creating Tomorrow Multi Academy Trust, based in Northamptonshire, submitted a bid to run this new provision and we were delighted to receive the approval of the Department for Education in December 2020. Creating Tomorrow is providing information on the new school and is seeking the views and feedback of all parties who may have an interest in, or be affected by, this new school provision. Creating Tomorrow Multi Academy Trust brings expertise in special educational needs and has a proven record of supporting the most vulnerable in our communities into adulthood and independence. More information about Creating Tomorrow and our vision and values as sponsor of Windmill Hill School can be found on our website.
